Aftercare.

Dermal Filler.

It is advisable that you do not touch the area for 6 hours. Do not apply make up for approximately 24 hours.

Alcohol acts a blood thinner and should be avoided for at least 24 hours after getting lip fillers. Alcohol can cause inflammation, increase the likelihood of bruising, and make swelling worse.

For pain relief, avoid blood-thinning medication like Asprin & Ibuprofen. Paracetamol is fine.

Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water will help your body heal & improve the result.

Eat plenty of hydrating fruits and vegetables and try to avoid excess salt, which may worsen swelling.

For 48 hours you should avoid exposure to UV and extreme heat i.e. sauna, steam, sunbeds, very hot showers, strenuous exercise etc, as this may increase discomfort and swelling.

WHEN TO SEEK ADVICE

Infections can occur but are thankfully, extremely uncommon.

If you get a painful or itchy bump or itchy swelling near an injection site that continues for more than 3 days.

If you think you are having an allergic reaction.

If any side effect continues for more than 3 days.

WHEN IMMEDIATE HELP COULD BE REQUIRED

Pending Necrosis though extremely rare needs immediate attention to prevent scarring.

It is caused by filler or swelling disrupting the usual blood supply causing discolouration (pale or dusky coloured skin) usually associated with pain within the first few hours after a treatment.

Higher risk areas are in the forehead or frown area, and the corner of the nose. It can occur in many places, however. It requires an immediate return to the clinic or if after hours to A+E.

Anaphylaxis is an extreme allergic reaction & quite rare. If immediately after your treatment, you were to start to feel generally unwell and develop swelling and redness around your face your clinician is trained to recognise and deal with anaphylaxis.

If you are no longer in the clinic 999 should be called for an urgent ambulance explaining your concern is anaphylaxis

AREAS THAT REQUIRE SPECIFIC ATTENTION

LIPS

If you had local or topical anaesthetic, please do not consume any hot or cold drinks until your sensation has returned to normal.

You must also be careful when eating so as to avoid biting your lip.

If you experience any lumpiness in lips, they can be gently massaged to help smooth them out. If they are too sore to massage, they will smoothen out by themselves within 28 days.

Smoking can increase the risk of infection, so it’s important not to smoke immediately after getting lip fillers. If you feel that you need to, make sure anything coming into contact with the lip is clean.

Your lips will swell and possibly bruise, this can give the appearance of ‘unevenness’ and a ‘lumpy’ feeling in the lips. This will settle once the swelling and bruising have gone.

Although most lips settle within 2 weeks, appearance during the first 28 days should not be seen as the final result. In rare cases, swelling can last several months.

Immediately after = Swelling, possible bruises.

Same evening = moderate to severe swelling.

Day 2-3 = moderated to severe swelling, bruising, possible asymmetry, firm, possible lumps.

Day 4-7 = mild swelling, mild bruising, possible asymmetry, firm, possible lumps.

Day 8-14 = reduced swelling, reduced asymmetry, firm, reduced lumpiness.

Day 14-28 = no swelling, no bruises, lips begin to soften, any lumpiness or unevenness will begin to even out during this period but they still may take the full several months to settle.

NOSE

Expect Bruising, some slight swelling & redness and a feeling of stuffiness for a few days.

CHEEKBONES, CHIN & JAW

Bruising, slight swelling & redness.

The treated areas can feel very tight & tender for a few days. Edges & corners may look sharper for the first 14 days, these will smoothen out.

For cheekbones, it is important that you sleep upright or on your back for at least 72 hours. Sleeping on your side can cause asymmetry.

For chin & jaw, you will feel boluses (lumps) underneath the skin, this is normal & intentional.

Understanding Lip Filler Migration: Causes and Prevention in 2024

Lip fillers are hugely popular for adding volume and creating a youthful look. But let's cut to the chase: some practices almost guarantee lip filler migration, where the filler moves away from the intended area, resulting in an uneven or unnatural appearance. Here's the no-nonsense truth about what causes lip filler migration and how to prevent it.

What is Lip Filler Migration?

Lip filler migration happens when the filler shifts beyond the targeted area, often settling above the upper lip. This results in an unbalanced look and can occur immediately or over time.

Causes of Lip Filler Migration

1. Injection Technique

Poor injection technique is a major cause of migration. Placing the filler too superficially or in the wrong tissue plane can cause it to move. Even the best injector will struggle if using flawed techniques.

2. The Russian Technique

The Russian technique, aiming for a heart-shaped pout by injecting filler vertically, is a migration risk. It uses multiple entry points and higher filler volume in a small area. This increased pressure often pushes the filler beyond intended borders.

3. Injecting Along the Border for Definition

Injecting filler along the vermillion border (where the lips meet the skin) is another migration risk. The border isn't a closed compartment; it's dynamic and constantly moving. Fillers here can easily migrate, especially with natural lip movements like talking and eating.

4. Type of Filler Used

Not all fillers are the same. Fillers that are too fluid or lack cohesiveness are prone to migration. Use high-quality, cohesive hyaluronic acid-based fillers specifically designed for lips.

5. Volume of Filler

Overfilling the lips is a guaranteed way to cause migration. Dermal fillers are hydrophilic, meaning they attract and draw in water over time. This can cause the filler to expand and disperse. Excessive filler creates pressure, pushing it into unintended areas. Moderation is key. Start with less and add more during follow-up appointments if needed. A conservative approach yields more natural and stable results.

6. Anatomical Factors

The lips are dynamic and connected to surrounding facial tissues, not a closed compartment. Imagine a loosely tied balloon—air easily moves within and escapes under pressure. Fillers can migrate within the lips if not properly contained.

7. Post-Treatment Behavior

Post-treatment care is crucial. Activities that put pressure on the lips, like massaging, touching, or strenuous exercise, can cause filler to move. Follow aftercare instructions carefully.

8. Quality of Filler

Cheap fillers are a disaster waiting to happen. High-quality fillers integrate well with tissues, reducing migration risk. Always choose reputable brands from certified providers.

9. Patient’s Skin Elasticity and Health

Skin elasticity and overall health impact filler stability. Poor skin elasticity from aging or genetics can lead to migration. Health conditions affecting skin quality or healing can also increase risks.

Preventing Lip Filler Migration

To prevent lip filler migration, stick to these straightforward strategies:

  • Avoid Overfilling: Less is more. Start with a conservative amount and add more if needed later.

  • Avoid Risky Techniques: Skip the Russian lip technique and vermillion border injections—they’re known for causing migration.

  • Choose High-Quality Fillers: Use reputable, high-quality fillers designed for lips.

  • Follow Post-Procedure Instructions: Stick to aftercare guidelines and avoid putting pressure on your lips.

  • Select an Experienced Injector: Make sure your injector is skilled and understands facial anatomy.

Conclusion

Lip filler migration is preventable if you avoid overfilling, risky injection techniques, and cheap fillers. Stick to these no-nonsense tips, and you’ll achieve beautiful, lasting results. If you’re considering lip enhancement, consult a qualified professional to ensure the best outcome.
